Un pezzo infinito di storia della Viola tra schiacciate, stoppate, sorrisi e ricordi.

Emozioni su emozioni, stoppate su stoppate. Dai primi anni alla Viola tra immaturità e voglia di crescere, l’esplosione, il dominio in campionato, le stoppate, le schiacciate, l’entusiasmo, i sorrisi.

Il cittadino di Reggio Calabria, della Sosta di Villa San Giovanni, del lungomare di Pellaro è ritornato in città qualche tempo fa per riabbracciare tutti in occasione del Trofeo Sant’Ambrogio.

Oggi, il grande Dean, ritornato da protagonista in Nba dopo gli anni di Reggio e Pesaro(incredibile il suo contributo nella crescita di Kevin Garnett ai Minnesota.) compie cinquantadue anni.

Ecco l’intervista rilasciata a Nino Romeo qualche tempo fa.

Ciao Dean, è davvero un enorme piacere per noi risentirti. Come stai innanzitutto e cosa fai adesso nella vita di tutti i giorni?

Oggi vivo a Las Vegas e mi godo semplicemente la vita. Da quando ho smesso con la pallacanestro mi sono occupato davvero di tantissime cose. Ora invece solo relax.

Torniamo un po’ indietro negli anni, stagione 1990/1991. Sei arrivato a Reggio proveniente da Forlì. La prima stagione non fu delle migliori, davvero sfortunata e finì con la retrocessione in A2. La stagione successiva, però, fu un enorme successo, vincemmo il campionato conquistando la promozione in A1. Domenica la Viola ha giocato contro Ferrara, nel Marzo 1992, con i 63 punti realizzati dal tuo compagno di squadra Michael Young battemmo la Cercom a Ferrara. Cosa ricordi di quella brillante stagione?

Quella fu una grande stagione, ricordo quant’era forte la nostra squadra. Michael era davvero un grande realizzatore e compagno di squadra. E dopo un anno insieme tutto è poi venuto di conseguenza. E’ stata un’annata divertente.

Stagione 1992/1993, probabilmente la miglior stagione di sempre nella storia della Viola Reggio Calabria: Santoro, Sconochini, Bullara, Spangaro, Avenia, Rifatti, Giuliani, Volkov, Lorenzon, i coach Recalcati e Benedetto e… Dean Garrett. Probabilmente la miglior squadra di sempre della nostra Viola. 

Quella fu LA stagione e 20 anni dopo, tutti ricordiamo ancora molto bene quella data: 18 Aprile 1993, quarti di finale playoffs, gara 3, contro la Benetton Treviso… sul punteggio di 84-82 a pochi secondi dalla fine, un gran passaggio di Donato Avenia ed il tuo canestro valido annullato dagli arbitri. 

Un episodio scolpito per sempre nella nostra mente: tutti dicono che quell’anno avremmo potuto vincere lo scudetto e che il futuro sarebbe poi stato diverso. Da quel giorno Treviso è la squadra più odiata da noi tutti. Crediamo che anche tu ricordi molto bene quella stagione e quel finale terribile di gara 3, vero?

Ricordo quella partita molto bene. Visto che ora non sono più in Italia credo di poter dire che quel giorno gli arbitri ci hanno fatto un grosso torto. Non volevano vedere una squadra di Reggio giocare il turno successivo. E credo fortemente che quella squadra avesse un’ottima chance per vincere lo scudetto.

Sei ancora in contatto con i tuoi ex compagni di squadra attraverso i social networks?

Sì , sono ancora in contatto con i miei compagni di squadra ed anche con alcuni amici di Reggio. E’ sempre bello poter guardare le loro foto, sentirli e salutarli. Tutto questo grazie a Facebook.

Quali sono i tuoi migliori ricordi di Reggio, in particolare quelli fuori dal parquet? Raccontaci un episodio, o qualcuno o qualcosa che ricordi ancora.

Wow. I miei ricordi migliori dovrebbero essere sicuramente quelli dopo le partite e le nostre feste a “La Sosta” con tutti i tifosi. Sembrava che ci fosse sempre tutta la città lì e tutti erano sempre felicissimi delle nostre vittorie. Ma il mio ricordo più bello è il giorno in cui sono tornato per la prima volta a Reggio per giocare contro la Panasonic con la maglia della Scavolini. Non dimenticherò mai l’accoglienza ricevuta da tutti i tifosi e la loro standing ovation. Quello è stato un gesto davvero molto importante per me. Perché non ho mai voluto lasciare Reggio ed anche se non ero più lì i tifosi mi hanno dimostrato quanto ero stato importante per loro.

Sai che il nostro sogno è quello di poter riunire tutti i giocatori che hanno scritto la storia della Viola e vedervi tornare a Reggio per un grande evento, magari celebrandolo con una partita o anche solo per incontrare di nuovo tutti i tifosi qui. Amiamo molto la pallacanestro e sarebbe davvero fantastico potervi incontrare di nuovo.

Mi piacerebbe tanto tornare a Reggio. Penso a tutti i tifosi ed a tutti gli amici che ho ancora lì. Reggio avrà sempre un posto speciale nel mio cuore. Non dimenticherò mai i 3 anni che ho vissuto lì. Spero di poter tornare presto amico mio!!

6 years after the bankruptcy declared in 2007, our Viola Reggio Calabria started over again from the minor leagues and today celebrates the return in Legadue (formerly A2), which next year will be divided into Gold and Silver.
20 years ago one of the best basketball player in the history of our team arrived in Reggio and joined Panasonic Viola.

This player is Dean Garrett. Hi Dean, it’s really a big pleasure for us hearing from you again. How are you and what are you doing now in your life?

Right now I’m living in Las Vegas and just enjoying life. Since I’ve retired from basketball I have done many different things. Now I’m just relaxing.

Let’s go back in the days, season 1990/1991. You arrived in Reggio from Forlì. The first season wasn’t really good, really unlucky and it ended with a relegation to the A2. 
The following season however was a huge success, we won the championship and joined back the A1 league. Today we played against Ferrara, in March 1992 with your teammate Michael Young scoring 63 points we won in Ferrara against Cercom. What do you remember of that brilliant season?

That was a great season, I can remember how strong our team was, Michael was a great scorer and teammate. And after one year of playing together with all of my teammates everything just came together. That was a fun year.

Season 1992/1993, probably the best season ever in the history of Viola Reggio Calabria: Santoro, Sconochini, Bullara, Spangaro, Avenia, Rifatti, Giuliani, Volkov, Lorenzon, coaches Recalcati, Benedetto… and Dean Garrett. Probably the best team ever for our Viola.
This was THE season and 20 years after, we all still remember that date: 18th April 1993, quarter finals , game 3, against Benetton Treviso… 84-82, few seconds at the end, great pass by Donato Avenia and your last valid shot cancelled by referees. 
An episode indelibly printed in our minds: everyone thinks that we could win the italian championship that year and that everything would have been different in the future. Since that day Treviso has been hated from all of us.
We guess you still remember all of that season and that terrible end of game 3, right?

I remember that game very well. Since I’m not in Italy anymore I guess it safe to say that I think the Refs cheated us that day. They did not want to see a team from Reggio play the next round. I do belive that team had a very good chance to win the Championship

Are you still in touch with your ex-teammates through social networks ?

Yes I still stay in touch with my teammates and also other friends that I had from Reggio. It is always good to see pictures of them and to say hello. All of this thanks to Facebook.

Which are your best memories in Reggio, in particular off the court? Tell us an episode, someone or something that you still remember.

Wow. My best memories would have to be after the games and going to La Sosta to celebrate with everyone. It always seem like the whole town was there and everyone was so happy that we won the games… But my favorite moment was coming back to Reggio to play against Panasonic when I played for Scavolini. I will never forget how everyone cheered for me and gave me standing ovation. That really meant a lot to me. Because I never wanted to leave Reggio and even tho I was not playing there the fans showed me how much I meant to them.

You know, our dream is to see all of you coming back to Reggio for a big event and reunion with all those players who made the history of Viola, celebrating it with a basketball match or just to meet all the fans in Reggio.We keep on loving basketball here and it would be great to meet you again.

I would love to come back to Reggio. I think about the fans and all of the friends that I have there. Reggio will always have a special place in my heart. The 3 years that I lived there will never be forgotten. I hope I can come back soon my friend!!
