Dear Kobe,

Have a look at this picture from 1986. There is no caption but if we were to write the perfect one, it would be: ‘What’s incredible is not the realisation of a dream but looking back at how that dream became reality’.

The picture shows an eight-year old boy, proud to wear the jersey with the words Viola Reggio Calabria. Unbeknownst back then, he was destined to great things. That eight-year-old boy was you, Kobe.

Behind him are the city’s own ‘Riace warriors,’ Kim Hughes and Joe Bryant.

Jellybean Bryant is one of the legends of the game and a hero to the Viola. He still holds the record for the most points scored in one game – 69 to be precise.

These two champions, Hughes and Bryant, left an indelible mark in the history of this small seaside town, in the deepest South of Italy. They were followed by many others like Volkov, Garrett, Sconochini, Ginobili, Delfino.

The magical beauty of the Viola family is represented by that child in the picture. Even as a boy you had ants in your pants and you captured the admiration and affection of the Viola after each game in the sport center Palasport Botteghelle.

While the world looked at you with awe and you, Kobe, named yourself the Black Mamba and became legendary in your own right, you were still just one of the children of Reggio Calabria to us.

With a history that dates back 49 years, the Viola and its champions continue to represent the pride of the region, the best its people have to offer, a social redemption in a sense.

The greatness to which your father helped to create and which you yourself lived in your early years, is not just a sweet nostalgic memory but your reality. It is also the reality of the children of that generation who contributed to the DNA of the Viola and will continue to feed the magic of this team.

Dear Kobe, from the beaches of Gallico to the vast Ionic lands, your entire city has proudly watched you in your gold and purple NBA jersey, with your number 24 – from the Draft in 1996 to the last second on the court in 2016, we have and will shed tears of joy and sorrow.

In 20 magnificent years you have given us an idea of what basketball can do, from the beach shores to the arid desert.

Dear child of Reggio Calabria, fantastic Kobe, on this most beautiful stretch of land that is full of affection for you we close our eyes and dream. It doesn’t matter if it is just a dream because not many can even afford to dream it.

There will always be a home for you at this great club on the Straits of Messina. Our dream might be too big but maybe it is the same dream you unknowingly had as that 8 year-old boy in the picture.

We want you to come home, to wear our colours, to represent our city, just as your father did before you. There is a black and orange jersey waiting for you, with your name on the back “Bryant”

The black and orange supporters salute you, dear Kobe, our great basketball legend.
